Got error message writing to drive. Reboot computer and got drive failure message on BIOS screen. Secondary master- Maxtor Calypso_YAR43KJ7
Tried viewing hard drive in friend's computer and it was inaccessible there also. Does not show up in my computer windows explorer or computer management interface.

Power Cable and Data Cable Connectors to Hard Drive - for Desktop Computer

 

Any desktop computer hard drive has two connectors, one for power cable and other for data cable.

Power cable connects a hard drive PCB (Printed Circuit Board) with computer's power supply.

Data cable connects hard drive with a computer's motherboard.

Depending on the drive model, they may be

ATA Hard drive connectors (PATA / Parallel ATA / IDE)

To Open the case remove a side cover

 

SATA Hard drive connectors (S-ATA)

To Open the case remove a side cover Squeeze SATA connectors

 

 

 

 

WARNING: Some SATA connectors must be squeezed to disconnect them.

Common tips how to remove failed hard drive from desktop computer:

  1. Turn off computer, unplug and remove any cables connected to the computer.
  2. Open computer case
  3. Refer to the manual of the computer model to find out how to open the computer case. For most generic desktop computers you will need to remove side covers of case.
  4. Loosen the power cable and SATA or IDE ATA(PATA) ribbon cable from the hard drive.
  5. Gently remove the hard drive of the case (you may need to remove 4 screws from sides of HDD, or unlock sliding brackets (green plastic or metal box) and slide out the drive of the metal frame.
  6. Remove from the hard drive any brackets or side screws if they are not parts of the drive itself.
  7. Pack the drive by following shipping instructions
