The drive was plugged into the USB port and failed. It made a grinding noise for a while and when I disconnected power, it was warm to the touch. If the computer is booted with the drive connected, the computer fails to boot. When the drive is plugged in, it does not appear to be available and the device manager reports 'This device cannot start (Code 10).'

The hard drive doesn't spin and isn't recognized by the BIOS system. Try to access the hard drive many times via BIOS, Diagnostics by DELL software, Try to access the drive via USB adapter.
