Failure was gradual, over time system got slower and CHKDSK routine triggered on reboot. System failed to reboot before I was able to back it up; installed Norton Ghost prior to last failure. Note: I have a 3-year warranty with Best Buy, they replaced the hard drive and attempted to recover the data from old hard drive. They weren't successful because they believe there is a controller or drive mechanism problem.

XP downloaded & executed automatic updates the night before. In the morning, the disk would not mount. I get a Code 10 error--'this device cannot start'
