The only attempt at recovery was putting the drive in an external 2.5" USB box and connecting it via USB to both MAC and WINDOWS laptops, neither one of which could recognize the drive.

Probably, heat-related situation. Put in USB enclosure. I think the drive BIOS worked in the enclosure, but no data.
