As for the problem, the laptop was running fine and I was using a browser (possibly after the unit just came back up from a sleep mode -- I'm not sure). The system froze and I was unable to get a reset with Esc or Ctrl-Alt-Del, so I held the power button down for several seconds to reset. The system powered down and I left it off for 10-15 seconds. I restarted, got the Toshiba screen, and then the black screen appeared with the following error: "A disk read error occurred. Press Ctrl-Alt-Del to restart." I have done that repeatedly with the same result each time.
I took the unit to a local shop and the tech said he couldn't help (though he had been able to before on a partition issue) and that I needed an upper-tier type facility with a clean room. The drive has original parts. The only software recovery would've been by that technician.

- A blue screen appeared and stated that there was an Unmountable boot drive
- The computer was taken to Best Buy/Geek Squad; however, these folks were not able to recover any data as they stated that the "head" that reads the drive is "broken."
